Monotype number 1 ( Standing on the Road )
The prints are a unique monotype of oil on Garza or Arches paper. The technique, which may have a classical precedent of which I am unsure, is a method I developed to 'draw' oil paint onto a surface. I start with an original image, copy it onto paper, apply oil to the reverse side, then draw a new interpretation of the image onto a sheet using pencils, embossing / metal working tools, putty knives, etc. Different tones and textures are achieved by the way the oil is originally applied, how wet it is during application, and the pressure and marks I apply. I sometimes work over an image with solvents, washes or highlights. Names are derived from the original work.
